Opera in the Schools

West Bay Opera’s programs for school children continue to expand. In our elementary school program, professional singers, in costume, and a piano accompanist perform a shortened version of an actual opera which has been specially adapted for children. Opportunities for some students to take part in the performance as actors, stage hands, and chorus members are a regular feature of the program. Preparatory materials are sent to the school in advance of the performance. The teachers can use this material to prepare the children in advance to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the production.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Opera in the Schools presented Engelbart Humperdinck’s classic opera, Hansel and Gretel, to approximately 20,000 elementary school children in 47 Bay Area elementary schools. This production was especially adapted for young audiences, featuring costumes and scenery. Students from each school took part in every performance as actors and chorus. They and their teachers responded very enthusiastically to the production.

During the 2007-2008 school year, West Bay Opera’s program for the elementary schools will be a specially adapted abbreviated version of Rossini’s beloved opera, La Cenerentola.  It will be sung in English, using the witty translation prepared by Donald Pippin, Artistic Director of Pocket Opera. Student volunteers will once again perform in the production. Check back in early January for the teaching materials for this Opera in the Schools performance.
